How a low-cost, no-electricity device is expanding access to clean water | Open Philanthropy
The TuriTap, an electricity-free, low-cost water chlorination device developed by Dr. Amy Pickering and her team, is transforming access to clean drinking water in resource-limited settings
Research, Implementation
With millions of people worldwide still struggling with access to clean drinking water, our mission is to ensure that scalable and sustainable solutions reach the communities that need them most.
One of the most promising advancements in this space is the TuriTap, an electricity-free, low-cost water chlorination device designed to improve water safety without requiring behavioral changes from users. Developed by Dr. Pickering and her team, the TuriTap harnesses fluid dynamics to automatically dispense chlorine at the point of collection, ensuring reliable water disinfection without the challenges of manual household treatments.
A randomized controlled trial is currently underway in 40 Kenyan health care facilities to assess its impact on reducing waterborne diseases. The results of this research could pave the way for widespread adoption across sub-Saharan Africa and beyond, bringing us closer to a future where clean drinking water is the norm—not a privilege.
