Adapting the TuriTap to bring water treatment to manual handpumps | Givewell

Mangrove Water is introducing precise chlorine dosing at manual handpumps with a new TuriTap adaptation.

Research, Implementation, Technology

With millions of people worldwide still struggling with access to clean drinking water, our mission is to ensure that scalable and sustainable solutions reach the communities that need them most.

One of the most promising advancements in this space is the TuriTap, an electricity-free, low-cost water chlorination device designed to improve water safety without requiring behavioral changes from users. Developed by Dr. Pickering and her team, the TuriTap harnesses fluid dynamics to automatically dose chlorine at the community points of collection, ensuring reliable water disinfection without the challenges of manual household treatments.

Mangrove Water was recently awarded a grant from Givewell to adapt the TuriTap for operation at manual handpumps. This modification will enable precise, automated chlorination where it's needed most, benefiting the millions of people globally who depend on manual handpumps for their drinking water. Technology development and field testing are currently underway, with an expected timeline for a viable product by 2026.

Meanwhile, if you are interested in using the TuriTap in piped water systems, you can reach out to Mangrove Water directly to find out how to purchase it.
